The Gaze

Oil paint on timber panel.

The Gaze features a series of six oil paintings created to acknowledge the viewer rather than the subject. The paintings read from left to right, beginning with an image of the back of a woman's head and progressing through to eye-contact.

The series touches on the evolution of women represented in painting as the submissive subject of the male gaze. Eye contact with the painted subject changes the direction of the gaze to gravitate inwards whereas a lack of eye contact allows the viewer freedom to roam.
